Symptoms of depression, anxiety and peritraumatic distress are linked to aspects of the prenatal period, but also to the experience of childbirth. More specific prevention, screening and care measures, depending on the woman’s symptomatology, can be implemented during pregnancy or at the maternity. Further research seems essential to better understand the interactions between the prenatal period, childbirth and postpartum in explaining women’s mental health in the immediate postpartum period.

The syndrom of Post-Traumatic Stress increases suicidality, irrespective of whether the syndrom of Post-Traumatic Stress was developed as part of a military deployment or otherwise. The claim by the DFHP that deployment is not suicidogenic misses the point that military deployment is traumatogenic, and that syndrom of Post-Traumatic Stress is suicidogenic. It is time to call a spade a spade and acknowledge what the real societal cost of military deployment entails in Canada and elsewhere.

Important risk factors in community samples included current depression, labor experiences such as interactions with medical staff, as well as a history of psychopathology. In at-risk samples, impactful risk factors included current depression and infant complications. Further research should investigate how attitudes towards pregnancy and childbirth may interact with women’s experiences during delivery. Additionally, studies need to begin to evaluate possible long-term effects that these symptoms may have on women and their families.

There was no significant difference in these times between patients who did not undergo an episiotomy and those who underwent an episiotomy without a forceps delivery.
