Introduction : au début des années 2000, le terme « violence obstétricale » est apparu en Amérique latine dans plusieurs textes de lois de différents pays. Par la suite, l’usage de ce terme s’est répandu dans le monde anglo-saxon et francophone, sans que ces pays légifèrent. Ce sujet interpelle et suscite des interrogations sur sa définition. Ainsi, existe-t-il un consensus international scientifique pour le concept de violence obstétricale ?

Objectif : élaborer une définition de la « violence obstétricale » à partir de la littérature scientifique. Matériels et méthodes : cette étude est une revue de la littérature scientifique internationale recouvrant la période de 1999 à juin 2017. Seize articles ont été sélectionnés selon la méthode de la Haute Autorité de Santé (HAS) puis analysés selon la méthode d’analyse de contenu (Bardin, 2007).

Résultats : une typologie de la violence obstétricale a pu être identifiée. Se manifestant à différentes périodes de la vie sexuelle et reproductive de la femme, la violence obstétricale est l’articulation de deux types de violence : celle liée à la mise en place de protocoles médicaux institutionnalisés et celle de genre. Elle constitue une violation des droits humains.

Conclusion : l’étude a révélé un consensus international pour définir la violence obstétricale comme une violence de genre, dans un contexte institutionnel de surmédicalisation. En revanche, les pratiques corrélées à la violence obstétricale, peuvent varier d’une étude à l’autre.
