Abstract (English)  :

Episiotomy was introduced into medical practice without adequate evidence of its effectiveness. At present, there are enough convincing data to persuade obstetric providers to abandon practices that are based on beliefs more than on facts, and to try to further restrict their use of episiotomy. Given the risks associated with the procedure, episiotomy should be considered a major operation. Women need to get appropriate information and to give their informed consent to an eventual episiotomy as well as to many other possible procedures during delivery.
