En tant que sage-femme et membre de longue date de l’AIMS, je réalise que la maternité est colonisée par la perspective biomédicale. Ceci est évident dans le discours et l’organisation des soins. Les historiens de la médecine obstétricale considèrent le Dr J. DeLee, un gynécologue américain, comme le père de l’obstétrique moderne. En lisant son article renommé de 1920, je sentais que je voulais lui parler, à la fois en tant que sage-femme et en tant que femme ayant accouché trois fois. Cette lettre - une fantaisie si vous voulez - en est le résultat : c’est ce que je veux lui dire, ainsi qu’à ses disciples, presque cent ans plus tard. La lettre était à l’origine écrite en français, comme prologue de mon premier livre (2017) : https://www.pum.umontreal.ca/catalogue/la-mise-au-monde

Abstract (English)  :

As a practising midwife and long-time AIMS member, I realise that maternity is colonised by the biomedical perspective. This is evident in the discourse and the organization of care. Historians of obstetric medicine consider Dr J. DeLee, an American gynaecologist, as the father of modern obstetrics. As I read his renowned 1920 article, I felt that I wanted to talk to him, both as a midwife and as a woman who has given birth three times. This letter – a flight of fancy if you will – is the result: it is what I want to say to him – and his followers – almost one hundred years later.
