Abstract (English) : | The aim of the study is to assess the importance of modesty of the parturient in the birthroom and to compare her feelings with those of the person(s) who is (are) accompanying her and of the medical staff. This is a prospective study carried out by using anonymous questionnaires distributed to women (N = 254), the person(s) accompanying them (N = 225) and to the medical staff (N = 68) present in the birth room at Poitiers University Hospital in the period 14 May–1 July 2007. Three-quarter (75,7%) of the women were satisfied with the respect shown for their modesty in the birth room. However, the satisfaction rate is significantly lower with religiously educated women (62,5%, P = 0,01), or women for which a delivery by forceps or vacuum extractor was required (57,5%, P = 0,0075). The issue of modesty during birth is perceived acutely by all three main categories of participants but their perceptions are different. In general, the mother and the person(s) accompanying them share the same feeling that the parturient’s modesty is correctly respected (75,7% and 73,2% respectively), whilst at the same time, only 58,2% of the medical staff think the same. This study clearly identifies simple actions and behaviours aiming at respecting women’s modesty in the birth room, which can be carried out by all caregivers, will ensure that the delivery is a positive experience and promote early interactions with the newborn. |
