Abstract (English) : | AIM: The term ’postnatal depression’ conveys the notion of a homogenous disorder, which can be investigated and treated as if it had a single cause. This paper argues that adverse events during childbirth can act as powerful triggers in the onset of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and subsequently, postnatal depression. Drawing on the qualitative data gathered during a mixed method, longitudinal prospective study with childbearing women (n = 499), three case studies are used to illustrate trauma responses to stressful childbirth experiences. |
